There are tutorials on the net describing this custom bokeh technique. Search for that or "diy bokeh". It isn't hard at all.

You should try it on your dslr (I see you own a Nikon D40X) with any long lens. It worked even for my kit lens (18-55 f/3.5-5.6) at 55 f/5.6.
